Es Devlin – Come Home Again

Designed by stage designer Es Devlin, this church dome installation is located in the square outside Tate Modern and is a joint project between Cartier and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

On the side near the Tate facade is the half-clad church facade, inspired by the dome structure of St Paul’s Cathedral. On the side opposite the Thames and is the interior of the church, where images of many of London’s endangered species, including birds, plants and insects, are hung.

I went to the square early to photograph the installation in its different states of natural light during the day and light at night. The installation has a holy and beautiful feel to it in the white light at night.

When the choir performs, the lights change in response to the song, and when only a small amount of light remains, reflecting the silhouettes of endangered animals, the installation creates a sense of broken aesthetic beauty.
