Tufting sample

When considering the use of wool for the final piece, I thought about tufting, which is also wool, but is easier and quicker to make than wool felt.

So I started to experiment with tufting,I chose a simple flower pattern to try, which I had seen in the kew garden and take photograph of it. I have modified the shape design and colour scheme to make it stand out more.

First I made a small sample, because I was new to tufting, I didn’t know how to trim it and I had very limited tools, so I didn’t make too many changes when trimming.

After getting familiar with the tufting tools, I tried to make another piece of sample, which was much neater after construction, but also lost the wild growth feeling of the plant. Looking back at the first sample, because it retains the initial plush texture, it looks more like a strong and unrestrained plant in a concrete forest, with a seemingly haphazard and random aesthetic.

Although neither of them was perfect, I was satisfied with both samples and started to design my final piece. I drew out the shapes and colours I had observed and created a rough design, based on my distillation of the colours of the plants and my drawings in sketchbook, as well as the inspiration I had gained from the environment in which the plants were growing.
